We are seeking a Senior Engineer to be a key contributor for the development of BMS' allogeneic gene-engineered therapy manufacturing process. As a part of the role, the Senior Engineer will perform new technology assessment and plan technology implementation to ensure robust and commercially viable manufacturing process. The Senior Engineer will design, execute complex experiment, and analyze data to support optimization and scale up of the allogeneic gene-engineered manufacturing process platform to meet the desired product quality attributes to ensure drug product safety and efficacy. The work supported by this role will ultimately support relevant regulatory submissions. This role will be expected to collaborate closely within a cross-functional technical team setting and own a project of limited scope.

The ideal candidate has industrial experience in gene-modified cell biology, human pluripotent stem cell culture and differentiation, expertise in bioreactor scale up, and has worked in a cross-functional team setting. This role may mentor junior members in the team and support phase-appropriate process development strategy formulation together with manager/senior member of the team and drafting of appropriate documents and regulatory filings .

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the development and formation of allogeneic gene-engineered manufacturing process strategy along with senior members of the teams.
  • Support assessment and implementation plan of specific new technologies to ensure robust commercial-enabling manufacturing processes.
  • Set up 2D and 3D scale-down models of iPSC maintenance and differentiation, and establish proof of concept differentiation protocols to enable scale up process design.
  • Establish early strategy for analytical assays to characterize iPSCs and differentiated cell types, and provide logistics support for testing and other lab-based activities, in collaboration with other analytical functions.
  • Independently design and execute complex experiments using sound scientific principles and statistical approaches like Design of Experiments (DOE) to support efficient cell therapy development and characterization efforts.
  • Maintain proficiency in data analysis and effective data presentation within a cross functional team setting, and present data to multiple stakeholder groups and teams.
  • Lead & support authorship and review for appropriate technical reports and regulatory filings.
  • Maintain a safe work environment in accordance with policies/procedures/regulations.
  • Provide mentorship and training to developing members of the team.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • MS with 7 years of experience/PhD with 1 year of experience; Degree in Biology, Engineering or other related disciplines.
  • Experience working with human pluripotent stem cells, and analytical tools to assess pluripotency and hematopoietic differentiation (eg, flow cytometry, molecular biology, biochemical techniques, high-end tissue culture, etc.)
  • Experience working in a self-driven, performance/results oriented, fast paced matrix environment.
  • Working knowledge of bioreactor scale up and process design is highly preferred. Familiarity with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work independently as well as in cross functional teams, meet deadlines, and prioritize multiple projects; able to creatively manage time and elevate relevant issues to project lead and line management.
  • Able to design and execute experiments independently, analyze data, and to communicate to teams and executive leaders.
  • Strong background in scientific and technical writing.
  • Able to apply engineering principles and statistical analysis, including design of experiments, to provide input and guidance for design of characterization studies
  • Detail oriented with excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Working knowledge of analysis software (eg, FlowJo, plate reader software, etc.) statistical software (R, JMP, Minitab, Prism) and data analysis toolset (Spotfire, Tableau, etc.) is preferred.
