Responsibilities (this is not an all-inclusive list, duties may evolve over time as business needs change)

  • Lead the design of the next-generation precision-medicine data platform and products to help researchers win the fight against cancer. Partner with the business and other technology leaders to do so with an open mind, and avoid dogma.
  • Hands-on engineering of the platform, modeling what great code and teamwork looks like, in partnership with other engineers and teams.
  • Foster a culture of support and growth through coaching/mentoring teammates, documenting your work, help teams break down complex systems and projects to understandable components, and actively participate in design and code reviews.
  • Understand our customers and our business needs by collaborating with Product Managers, Clinical and Molecular Data Scientists, and other Engineering teams to actively figure out what is required to add value, and help own the end-to-end solution with an open mind.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor degree preferred; one in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related would be a big plus.
  • Relevant certifications are a plus.
  • Healthcare experience is a big plus. Interest in Oncology is also a plus.
  • Experience delivering software in compliance and regulatory environments that require high data security and a focus on data privacy. desired.
  • Specific knowledge in managing PII/PHI and HIPAA/HiTrust a plus.
  • Experience building data analytics software platforms/products experience is required. A hybrid software engineer/data engineer is our preference. Can be heavier weighted either way.
  • Our platform will be leveraging the following tech. Bonus points for every tech listed below you have direct experience with...comparable tools with a willingness to learn the below tools is also welcome.
  • Structured & unstructured data as well as data at scale
  • Azure Data Lakes
  • Data pipelines with ADF/Synapse Workspace
  • Data streaming perhaps with Azure Stream Analytics
  • Azure Synapse for MPP
  • Azure Purview
  • Azure NLP/AI/Cognitive Services
  • Visualization capability (perhaps w/PowerBI)
  • Azure SaaS
  • Java mostly likely on the backend (though we welcome C#, Golang, Scala, etc. experience as long as you see tech as a tool & can be flexible to use what we select)
  • Python for data related work
  • REST APIs
  • Possibly GraphQL
  • Possibly Cosmos DB
  • Eventually we will build out a CI/CD pipeline w/Azure DevOps, AKS, Docker, etc. This will likely also include MLOps function.
  • 10 years minimum experience in Software Engineering, Design, Development to include architecture.
  • 5+ years of experience delivering backend platforms using high-scale distributed system tools and techniques.
  • Experience developing software in one or more programming languages ( Python, Java/Scala, Go, JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, etc.) and comfort in a multi-language/polyglot environment.
  • 4 or more years of delivering cloud-based software solutions, in AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform or other. Azure experience is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience with modern software development concepts including operations-first delivery via DevOps/GitOps, automated testing/CI/CD pipelines, zero-downtime deployments, canary analysis patterns, and SCRUM/Kanban methodologies.
  • Experience operating managed container orchestration platforms (Azure Container Instances, AKS, EKS, Compute Engine, ECS, raw Kubernetes, etc.) would be beneficial.
  • Experience securing services and APIs with patterns such as OIDC, OAuth, Azure Active Directory or AWS Cognito is a plus.
  • Experience delivering componentized, horizontally scalable, highly-available REST-style services and APIs via microservice or serverless patterns.
  • Experience with GraphQL, Falcor or similar JSON data composition/aggregation systems is ideal but not required.
  • Advanced understanding of databases in the industry including traditional SQL (PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Azure SQL, etc.), NoSQL databases (DynamoDB, CosmoDB, Cassandra, etc.), MPP (Snowflake, Azure Synapse, Redshift, BigQuery, etc.), Data Warehouse design, BI reporting and dashboard development.
  • Experience with data movement/processing/streaming solutions such as Kafka, Kinesis, NiFi is ideal.
  • Machine Learning processes and platforms info a plus (model training/serving, model management, feature store engineering, etc.).
  • Experience with data quality/diagnostics and lineage systems (Apache Atlas/Ranger/Griffin, Deequ, Azure Purview, etc.) is preferred.
  • Experience with data movement/processing systems such as Kafka, Kinesis, NiFi would be useful.
  • Delivered MDM-style solutions in partnership with data stewards/subject matter experts.
  • Delivered highly observable services using distributed tracing, logging and metric collection. Experience integrating with systems like Prometheus, Splunk, ELK/EKD to visualize and alert (is a plus).
