Job Overview:

The VP, Architecture & Ecommerce will work closely with the SVP, Applications and Innovation to set the vision and drive a technology & architecture strategy that is tightly linked to UNFI's business strategy and ensures that all Information Technology initiatives are advancing the strategy. This role is expected to build strong relationships within IT and business partners, with a focus on collaboration and direct communication. This position will aid the department in meeting the company's strategic business goals.

This role will also be responsible for partnering with the UNFI eSolutions and other business teams to provide digital leadership, strategic program execution, talent development, operational excellence, and execution of, UNFI Easy Options, Honest Green. This includes leading a team of Application Managers and Developers.

Plans and directs activities of a team of directors, managers, architects and engineers. Creates a vision for the organization, establishes a strategy, sets goals and objectives, manages performance and deliverables and develops/mentors staff. Participates in succession planning activities to identify and develop future IT leaders. Oversees performance and deliverables of a global workforce of associates and vendors.

Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Creates the vision, drive the Architectural best practices and lead the execution and strategy of the Architectural Roadmap.
  • Build an Architecture organization that engages with enterprise and product software teams to ensure architectural patterns meet the needs of products across the enterprise. This includes providing Solution Architects to work within those teams to review architecture, provide feedback on application designs and provide overall technical leadership.
  • Define, align, and deliver on a digital roadmap that drives simplification, integrates the digital experience through all customer touch points, and focuses on customer value within the UNFI digital eCommerce and mobile platforms.
  • Collaborate with IT and Business peers and define target state technology architecture and roadmaps that enable business imperatives while building on modern architecture principals and technology modernization.
  • Looks for opportunities to capitalize on technology advances through analysis of key industry and technology trends to assess potential impact on the enterprise. Lead technology proof of concepts to ensure feasibility of architecture solutions.
  • Ensure the architecture organization builds strong partnership with engineering to ensure proper alignment of skills with technology direction.
  • Prepares and delivers comprehensive communications to convey architectural direction and how it aligns with enterprise strategy
  • Demonstrates the ability to form top-performing teams by empowering team members appropriately, leading through example and gaining the respect of peers and associates. Encourages creative and innovated thought within team in order to sponsor team growth. Identifies and develops top talent to support the organization's succession planning efforts.
  • Creates a service-oriented IT culture that drives business intimacy with each banner and function across UNFI. Establishes strong working relations and partnerships with business, vendors and peers. Partners with key business leaders in addressing critical issues and resolving major problems. Actively manages business satisfaction levels on a regular basis, alerting team to concerns. Drives business intimacy by bringing IT functions closer to the customer.
  • Communicates effectively across the organization. Influences direction and strategy development through ongoing and formal communications with Senior IT and Business leadership.
  • Manages performance utilizing organization's performance management system, practices and tools; applying them to developing and improving individual, team, and organizational performance. Implements formal or informal rewards and recognition programs for employees and identifies opportunities to enhance performance. Works with associates to create individual and career development plans.
  • Creates successful relationships with strategic vendor partners. Works collaboratively with vendor partners to ensure product and service offerings support the needs of the business and IT. Effectively manages the utilization of external services (eg, product or platform vendors, service providers, contractors, consultants, outsourced functions). Reviews feedback on vendor performance, terms, conditions and schedules of agreements to ensure timely resolution of problems along with maintenance of strategic business relationships.
  • Reviews teams' budgets for accuracy and ensures value has been added to the business through cost savings and ROI analyses.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • Master's in IT Management strongly preferred


  • Minimum of 15 years of Information Technology experience required.
  • 15-20 years of relevant Information Technology experience preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience with enterprise architecture, software architecture and design patterns.
  • 7+ years of experience with complex architectural patterns (SOA), building APIs, microservices, and event driven design.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in other retail or consumer packaged goods companies.
  • 5+ years in a management role with a proven track record of leading effective teams, particularly with distributed teams.
  • Deep experience with software design and delivery on cloud platforms (like AWS) with an understanding of economic and business models for software in the cloud.
  • Organizational and transformational leadership experience in an agile operating model.
  • Experience managing department budgets required.
  • Experience managing successful vendor partner relationships.


  • Has depth and breadth of knowledge across multiple software engineering disciplines
  • Extensive knowledge of Cloud Native Architectures, in particular architecting enterprise applications on public cloud such as AWS, GCP or Azure.
  • Extensive knowledge of eCommerce in a retail or wholesale organization.


  • Proven ability in the development of strategic technology direction and architecture vision for a large organization
  • Deep understanding of eCommerce architecture strategy and design.
  • Proven track record of Influencing C-level leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to create top performing teams and lead through example.
  • Strong analytical, problems-solving and conceptual skills.
  • Strong project management skills; experience organizing, planning and executing large-scale projects from vision through implementation, involving internal and external resources.
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate and influence at all management levels and with both technical and non-technical individuals and successfully manage in a cross-functional environment and remote locations.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with a focus on the ability to leverage technology as a business enabler.
