Oversees and is responsible for the development and operations of Molecular Diagnositcs Laboratory (MDL) for the Center for Genomic Medicine. Directs, plans, organizes and evaluates the administrative near and long-term operational goals and objectives in compliance with regulatory standards and internal policies for the Cancer Institute. Ensures continual efficient and compliant operational performance of the department and related areas.

Job Responsibility

  • Oversees Clinical Laboratory Evaluation Program (CLEP)/College of American Pathologist (CAP) certification and accreditation activities required to support a clinical molecular diagnostics service.
  • Works with Director of Center for Genomic Medicine and Lab Medical Director to supervise clinical laboratory quality management system and ensure compliance with CLEP/CAP/NYS DOH/Joint Commission standards and local, state and federal regulations.
  • Oversees and coordinates the clinical and research activities of the Molecular Diagnostics Lab (MDL) for the Cancer Institute.
  • Evaluates new and novel equipment and supplies necessary to optimize Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) outputs for patient care.
  • Designs, implements and oversees the technical operation of the laboratory pipeline.
  • Designs and implements the quality metrics for the outputs of the NGS pipeline, as well as troubleshoots the NGS Pipeline.
  • Provides timely and accurate molecular pathology reports on the clinical material obtained from patients.
  • Provides consultant advice to pathologists, oncologists, and other clinicians throughout Northwell Health.
  • Ensures current standards of care are used in the laboratory to meet the needs of growth, change and modernization.
  • Active citizenship in intra- and interdepartmental conferences/committees.
  • Implements and optimizes operational workflow to ensure the highest level of patient care, while optimizing resource management.
  • Implements the quality improvement program to optimize technical, clinical and quality metrics.
  • Ensures safety precautions are compliant with requirements of the hospital and regulatory agencies.
  • Implements strategic plans, drives departmental goals and objectives, and improves departmental performance across multiple sites.
  • Results/performance have direct impact on costs and achievement of family objectives and a substantial impact on the overall function.
  • Identifies opportunities to initiate operational change within department(s).
  • Actively participates in the education of residents, medical students fellows and medical technology students.
  • Creates educational programs in alignment with Divisional, Departmental and System needs.
  • Responsible for directing staffing appropriately for department(s) and collaborating with HR to fulfill requirements.
  • Assists in career development planning for team members.
  • Decisions typically relate to the implementation of new/updated programs or large-scale projects and supporting technical/operational procedures and processes.
  • Identifies opportunities to initiate operational change within department(s).
  • Acts independently to uncover and resolve issues associated with the development and implementation of operational programs.
  • Plans and recommends programs to accomplish mid to long-range objectives.
  • Responsible for day-to-day management of budget for departments.
  • Implements strategic policies when selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results.
  • Performs related duties, as required.

Job Qualification

  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Science, required.
  • Appropriate New York State Department of Health Certificate of Qualification in Molecular Pathology, as needed.
  • 8-12 years of relevant experience and 7+ years of leadership/management experience, required.
  • Relevant board certification preferred.
